Goal

Make daily transport smarter and more sustainable

Challenge

Electric vehicles (EVs) are the future of transport but long recharge times put people off making the switch from fossil fuels. VoltUp's founders had a brainwave – instead of recharging batteries, why not swap them for full ones?

Solution

We helped VoltUp create a battery swapping network that turns densely populated cities into smart cities. Our apps let users find stations, track their usage and make payments – allowing them to swap to a full battery in under 2 minutes..

In an evolving market, like the EV space, the requirements keep changing… and to be at pace with the market is really important. The Builder.ai team has really gone out of their way to bring in experts from different countries to help us build the solution even better.

Harsh Raj

Head of Marketing and Product at VoltUp

Leading the charge

Electric vehicles (EV) have long charge times, so running out of battery can mean having to wait 8 hours to recharge. Which is where VoltUp comes in. Its a network of Lithium-Ion battery charging stations, designed for 2-wheeler and 3-wheeler vehicles – and you don’t wait at all. You swap.

What did VoltUp build with us?

Drivers download the VoltUp app, which explains how it all works, takes bookings and payments, and interacts with the charging stations and the batteries themselves to see how much charge they have.

Beyond the simpler driver app, Harsh Raj explains the trickier part of this project, “We also build the entire software which controls the hardware of the swapping station including the communication to the cloud for features like authentication, which battery to be dispensed and managing the entire customer journey.”

Plus they needed a CRM and 3 internal support apps: VoltUp Steps for their sales team, VoltUp Platform for partners and VoltUp DSC to manage service requests.

Talking batteries…

But how exactly do you get a battery to talk to an app? Our solution for VoltUp used MQTT, this is a messaging protocol – a way for machines to talk to each other that’s commonly used for the internet of things (IoT).

“VoltUp aims to support 1 million electric vehicles on the roads, that’s a lot of batteries to keep track of. Built-in MQTT communication means the batteries can tell VoltUp how much charge they have left, how many kms they’ve travelled and how healthy they are – so drivers get peak performance each time they swap.

Driving long-term change

Naveen Pathak, Head of IT at VoltUp says, “It has been an interesting journey of over 2 years with Builder.ai where we have engaged with the design and development teams churning out more and more products and features for our consumers which have really helped VoltUp shape as a leader in the industry.”

But more than all the smart, disruptive tech, what impressed Harsh most is our support, “We have really enjoyed the Studio One plan. The 24x7 support for the business has been used extensively,as it is of upmost priority to keep the swapping station running at all times for which the Builder team has done a phenomenal job.”
